Foundational Literacy & Numeracy: The First Step Out of Educational Poverty

In many Indian villages and low-income urban neighbourhoods, children sit in Class 4 or 5 yet struggle to read a simple paragraph or solve a Class 2 sum. This is not a lack of intelligence — it is a gap in foundational literacy and numeracy.

Without reading fluency and number sense, every later subject becomes harder. Closing this gap early is one of the most powerful ways to support underprivileged learners.

Why foundations matter more than tuition for board exams

Coaching for Class 10 may look urgent, but a child who cannot decode text or understand place value cannot fully benefit from higher lessons. Community centres, after-school reading clubs, and patient practice with local-language and English materials rebuild confidence grade by grade.

What works in Indian communities

  • Daily reading aloud in Hindi, Marathi, or the child's home language
  • Storybooks and graded readers, not only textbooks
  • Games and activity-based maths instead of only rote worksheets
  • Volunteer mentors who meet children at their current level

How LAF supports this

At the Lata Agrawal Foundation, we focus on practical learning support in Wardha and partner communities — free learning resources, mentoring, and programmes that help children catch up with dignity.
